I also don't understand which user's name I should type. I want to E-mail a link to a single file to a person I'm not sharing any folders with so he can download this one file. If you wish to share a file in a folder, you must select just the file inside the folder and click Share on the ribbon then select Email.
You can also select Get a link to send the link of the file. If you want to make sure that you have shared just one file in the folder and no other files, select the file and click Information icon on the right.
Repeat the process to check the access permission on other files. If you see the envelope icon or a shared link icon, this means the file is shared. You can click Change Permissions to know who has the access on the file.
