Google is basing most of its claim of a secure operating system on a new feature in Chrome OS called 'verified boot.
Performance The following benchmarks are of the original version of the Chrome OS that shipped on the Cr There have been significant improvements since then, and CNET will update the results below as soon as possible. Benchmarking the first beta of the Chrome OS proved to be a bit tricky. It's hard to measure the impact of various essential programs, such as a productivity suite or media player, on the operating system because they exist largely in the cloud.
However, because the operating system is also the browser, we were able to run browser benchmark tests against it and compare them against the same version of Google Chrome, but running on a Windows 7 laptop.
These tests are admittedly not a direct apples-with-apples comparison. Google has not yet released the specifications of the Cr, saying only that it's running an Intel Atom processor. However, they do provide a snapshot of what the Cr with Chrome OS is capable of at this time, and we can expect these numbers to improve as Google continues to upgrade both the Chrome OS and Chrome browser.
The two laptops were running nearly identical versions of the Chrome browser. Tested in December , the Cr was running Chrome v8. By comparison, the version of Chrome OS available in early June is What we can see from these tests is that the hardware will have a massive impact on the performance of both the browser and the operating system. This isn't news, but the fact that the Cr's version of the Chrome browser was so dramatically affected in all three tests tells us that what hardware future computer makers choose to support Chrome OS on will almost definitely change how well the public receives it.
We were also a bit surprised that the full cold-boot and log-on procedure, not counting the time it took to type in the log-on password, averaged to nearly 30 seconds. Some Windows 7 computers have, anecdotally, been found to boot up cold in similar times. As mentioned earlier, this time had been cut in half by early June Of course, the real time-saving feature of the Chrome OS is the resume from wake, which is practically instantaneous.
As long as the computer isn't shut down, it will wake extremely quickly. Conclusion Although Chrome OS does update regularly, the current iteration is more usable than where the operating system was even six months ago. The quirkiness of a PC without the traditional touches of a PC desktop have been replaced by something recognizable and usable.
As long as Google continues to support the project, Chrome OS will keep improving. One day, and perhaps sooner rather than later, it might even be ready for all.
In fact, all you need is a working computer and a USB Drive. This method works whether you are running Windows, macOS, or Linux.
But you will need a few things before you start. Note: The USB drive will be completely erased in the installation process. If you have any valuable data on the drive, please save it elsewhere. The best alternative source is Arnold The Bat. You will now have a 7-Zip file on your hard drive.
Extract this file using one of the 7-Zip apps mentioned above. You will also have an unzipped image file of the latest Chromium OS as shown in steps one and two. And you have Etcher installed on your computer. Start Etcher. Etcher validates the burning process i. You need to enter Boot and choose the USB drive you just created. For a Mac: As soon the Mac shuts down and restarts, press and hold the Option key.
Choose the USB drive in the boot menu, hit enter, and the computer will boot from the drive. You will have to setup Chrome OS the first time you use it, ideally with your existing Google account.
Whenever you run it in the future, it will go directly to the login screen. You can even install several Linux programs and some Windows software too. Read More with an easy-to-use software called CloudReady. The installation procedure is actually simpler than the above method.
This is in continuation of my previous comment. I tried again this time with downloading Camd64 img. It was successful. I have windows 10 pro. I tried exactly the way as described.
Would be of great help if the author can guide us properly. As others have reported Etcher gave multiple partitions on the usb pen drive and Windows kept coming up telling me I needed to format each partition before I could use the drive. There was the same result with using Rufus so it's not the Etcher software. The big problem then was getting the messed up usb drive back into shape by removing those partitions - 11 in my case. I failed with the tips given using Windows tools.
After hours of frustration I found that using MiniTool Partition Wizard freeware will sort out the usb stick. When MiniTool Partition Manager is running plug in the messed up usb stick and the tools available in the program will enable you to sort it out.
Make sure you are feeling rested, then taking care that you are working on the right drive Drive 2 on my computer you can use the tools available.
Remember to click on the tick shown at the top of the program screen to Apply changes. Windows clearly doesn't like these OS image files. I even tried changing img to ISO but the problem repeated itself. I haven't been able to produce a bootable usb drive using the various online guides. Having the exact same experience. I did what they said I cannot get this to work.
I want to use this on an older BIOS laptop. I have tried several different images at ArnoldTheBat's site with the same result every time. I am experiencing the exact same thing. This guide no longer works - at least not with the images that is published from the Arnold the Bat site. This version is running 'glitch free' as fast or in some cases faster than my iMac running Yosemite.
When I installed a number of extensions, the performance became very sluggish, not so with apps from the Web Store. Since Chrome OS wipes a complete session after I use it, I can start from scratch every time I use it great for banking, other sensitive tasks. Nice to have for the extra functionality, experience that Chrome OS offers. Windows Using the latest Camd64 image, Etcher destroyed my Verbatim 3. The drive was no longer recognized by any system While Etcher was copying to the drive, at the end, it suddenly started created a bunch of disks that don't exists and was asking me to format them.
Chromium would not boot when I tried to reboot from the USB. The drive was no longer recognized when rebooted back into Windows Not happy having a USB ruined. Doesn't work. I made the image file OK but Etcher creates loads of discs on the USB drive and none of my computers could boot from it. Either a bug in Etcher and there is no way of checking the img file is valid.
I don't know if you found out how, but on the web page referenced in the article arnoldthebat. If you have Windows, here's what is given:. Use 7zip to extract IMG file from the downloaded file. Boot from USB stick. If you're using another operating system you did not specify which one you're using, be it Mac OS, Windows or Linux , then you'll find the methods on that page as well.
Not necessary to use chrome book recovery utility. Chrome os works excellently from my pen drive in my Acer laptop G. Thanks a lot. I see Google Play on the last screenshot. No Google Play support on these builds!? I would be happy when Google Desktop comes out of the OS! They have already shown their talent in the open source operating system for mobile devices, now completely stop laptop, desktop OS.
I later booted into USB and everything worked fine. Warning: Proprietary drivers aren't installed during installation because that would make OS device specific. Using open-drivers make sure it will be fine with almost every device. I nearly used this but did some research and found its loaded with bloatware and a bit coin mining tool so passed!
Great way to spread a virus by having every cheap greedy user blindly follow your instructions. It's a clean uninfected version used by educational institutions.
And it works on any old PC. I SO agree It's what I recommend, and what I do to ant pre-7 machines I get in for refurbing and donating. I try USB boot with version When I type 'chronos' ' gmail' is automaticly added and always standig a message 'Network not connected and offline login fail'.
Do you want to install Chrome OS on your hard disk, alongside your existing operating system? See this I can't wait for the full version i will be the first one to buy a chrome netbook. I can see the concept unfolding just from the start. It's going to be amazing. So simple its too cool. When you boot chrome off a thumb drive, do files, web browsing history, etc. I'll be happy when google comes out with a desktop os! I have copied all files.
Now, the Software always says 'Not enough Space on Disk'. I already read the Comments on this page referencing on that problem. Its working on my Asus ha. It also likes my WiFi Adapter. But its running really slow. Might there be any other configurations to be done? Worked like a charm on first try. I have an HP nx laptop It just doesn't like my wireless adapter.
I have a 8 gig flash drive and after reformatting on a friends computer it works fine on theirs Windows 7 But now it doesn't work in any of my USB ports Windows Vista The ports work fine and can read other USB flash drives and mice just fine. I don't wanna just give this flash drive away to them and it wasn't the other issues found in these comments about it being reduced to mb.
It shows up in the task bar to 'safely remove' but no pop-up window that you usually get when initially plugging a USB flash drive in. It could be that when the flash drive was formatted on win 7 it also assigned a drive letter.
On your pc check your drives have you got any other drive letters that are not in use. If so use this command in a dos prompt or simply copy and paste the text into notepad and save as all files the file as deletedrivemaps. Great watching top gear on the bbc iplayer. Running from a 4gb stick on an Asus f3f centrino duo. The laptop was heading for the bin as the motherboard won't recognise the hard drive.
This os runs great from the stick perfect for the kids. VirtualBox ran it on all systems. Hey can I know how to shut down the os if running on a computer Google tells that u can just put down the lid of a laptop but what about computers Please Help and thats weired that google didn't make a shut down button Great idea, but 3 Gig image size? C'mon guys, get real.
If this is the future in OS's, we have a lot to worry about. A big WTF. Rob, Remember you made this comment. A year or so from now you'll be eating some humble pie. After some problems with a U3 flash drive, which I had to reformat etc, etc, I got this working fine on an Aspire netbook.
Only problem is - not being a Linux man - where do I find my hard drive for setting Downloads location? I'm fine with Win7 Home Premium for now! But it's fun to play with. On the subject of USB drive, I used an 8gb drive. I can see and delete the 2nd and 3rd partitions although, presumably, doing so would corrupt Chrome , but I cannot use them in Windows, and cannot assign drive letters. I presume this is because they are Linux partitions. I also cannot create a partition in the unallocated space.
There is a workaround posted at the link above, which I might try! Workaround above doesn't work. The Lexar program BootIt doesn't even see the removable drive, again, presumably, because the drive is not useable in Windows once the Chrome image has been written to it. Really want to try this! What types of internet connections will it work with at this stage? Hear people have problems with wifi. What about 3g modems?
Those of you that got it to work, was it only with wired connections? Definatly the OS of the future for netbooks!!! Even the XP run like a 90 year-old granpa in the marathon And you have the chance to have a blue screen. I use Ubuntu 9. I definatly give my vote to this OS. Well done Google you shut the mouth of Bill Gates and his useless Windows 7.
Power to free OS!!!! Also very nice post!!! Very exciting, but before I try: is there any chance this will work with my internal 3g modem on my Aspire one? That is my only Internet connection right now.
I guess I would have to be very lucky to make that work since people don't even get wifi to work? Anybody knows anything about this?
The app that came with the pre-installed win xp for the 3g modem is called globetrotter connect. I can see the utility of this OS for running the likes of a cheap sub-PC-type machine like the old Psion Organisers or such like, but i'm not sure about running it on a netbook - seems like an exercise in 'how to disable as many of your netbook's features as possible, leaving you with just the very basics so you spent all that money for nothing'.
Jorge, well done! Presumably bring up a command window and Need to set ip, subnet mask, gateway and DNS. Please help! I was able to load Android too! Thank you! I would like that kind on thinstation :. I've just starting playing with this OS tonight. This from an USB stick. Not bad at all. Wireless networking does'nt seem to work but I can live with that for at while. Then again I did not try hard to make it work Looking so much forward to get it on a SSD drive.
Chromium OS Special Builds are an enhancement to the default vanilla. I've looked high and low, and found nothing. Hexxeh is bust as they've removed everything except for a 'latest' version which is simply a. So, where can I get it? Anyone knows where I can find a goddamn bootable iso file to install chromeOS? In fact, their search engine still advertises Google Chrome to users searching from rival browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer.
What makes Chromium different from Chrome is that it's not completely integrated with the Google ecosystem and anybody can fork from it. In the end, Chromium is not for everybody and its minimalist interface may take some getting used to.
On the other hand, it's great for heavy Google users that wish to synchronize their Google experience across multiple devices such as desktops, notebooks and mobile phones powered by Android.
